A Caribbean-American family, page by page

One page is free. The others are previews from the coloring book.

When is Caribbean American Heritage Month?

June. In the United States, June has been recognized as National Caribbean American Heritage Month by presidential proclamation since 2006. It is a time to celebrate the people, food, music and stories that Caribbean families have brought to American life.

Four easy activities for young children

Find the mangoes. Print the free Find 10 Hidden Mangoes page. Count the mangoes together, then talk about where mangoes grow and what they taste like.

Taste something spicy and something sweet. Ginger-O is named for ginger and Mang-O for mango. With a grown-up’s help, smell fresh ginger and taste a slice of mango, and decide which is “Zing!” and which is “Sweet!”

Make patio music. In the book the family plays hand drums and maracas. Tap a rhythm on a table or shake a jar of rice, and take turns copying each other.

Draw your own family. The Olé family has six people across three generations. Ask each child to draw who is in their family and one thing they like to do together.

About the family in these pages

The Olé family (say it “oh-lay”) is a first-generation Caribbean-American family: big sister Ginger-O, little brother Mang-O, Mom, Dad, Grandma and Grandpa. Meet each of them, or see more Caribbean coloring pages.
